September's meeting will begin with an overview of Theodore Allen's thesis on the Invention of the White Race, using clips from a presentation by Prof. Jeffrey B. Perry, Allen's archivist, and excerpts from the book. Allen visited every Virginian county for it's earliest records to discover exactly when the word "white" was used in reference to people of European descent. What he found out will amaze you! Allen's work influenced SDS and others in the 1960's.
After the presentation we'll discuss what we've seen, then talk about recent and upcoming OCRJC activity.

Lynn Burnett will be offering a lecture, followed by a facilitated discussion, about the radical white southerner Anne Braden and her involvement in the civil rights movement. We’ll hone in on the moments in Anne’s life that allowed her to shift her consciousness away from supporting segregation, and towards ultimately becoming a trusted ally and friend of movement leaders including Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ella Baker. We’ll also bring our attention to organizing and movement strategies, and reflect on what we personally find most meaningful from Anne’s story.

Gentrification Workshop - April Meeting
April 15, 2018
Join us for a workshop on gentrification presented by Chican@s Unidos and Protege Santa Ana. Gentrification is a process in which local, working class people and businesses get pushed out by developers, realtors, and investors to make room for wealthier people and larger businesses. This process is particularly harmful to working class communities of color, who are met with increased policing, unaffordable housing and evictions, and the overall cleansing of our cultures.
